FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is microcement?

Microcement (otherwise known as decorative concrete, thin layer concrete) is a modern finishing material based on cement, resins, additives and pigments. It is applied in a thin layer (usually 2-3 mm) on various surfaces - floors, walls, furniture, stairs.

Its biggest advantages are:
✔ no joints and uniform texture,
✔ water resistance
✔ can be applied over old tiles, concrete, plasterboard, etc.
✔ very high durability and mechanical resistance,
✔ availability in many colors

Is microcement water resistant?

Yes, we have two water-resistant microcement systems on offer: HydroFest and Festfloor Titan. You don't need to put a full waterproofing under them, they are water resistant in bulk.

What is the price of microcement?

The price depends on the system you want to work on. We will give you a minimum 15% discount from the retail prices in our store. The cost of labor per square meter you must determine yourself, as a rule, contractors take from 50€ to 130€ per meter.

What tools are needed for microcement application?

To apply microcement, you will need: an application trowel, a microfiber roller, a sander (such as an oscillating or eccentric sander), and an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Can microcement be combined with other materials, such as wood?

Yes, microcement can be combined with wood. However, care should be taken to raise the height of the microcement floor to the level of the wooden plank, for example, if the plank is 14 mm thick, the substrate should be prepared by making a 12 mm self-leveling screed and a 2 mm layer of microcement. This will ensure that the two surfaces are perfectly even, which will ensure that the materials connect properly.

How to combine microcement with wood?
Leave expansion joints - wood and microcement are materials with different physical properties - wood can expand and contract under changes in temperature and humidity, while microcement is more stable. Therefore, it is important to leave an expansion joint (gap) between these materials.
Filling the gap - the expansion joint should be filled with a flexible material that will allow the natural movement of the wood. This can be done with a cork strip, which is a natural and ecological solution. Cork, thanks to its flexibility and ability to cushion, perfectly compensates for wood movements caused by changes in humidity or temperature. You can also fill the gap with silicone, especially in areas where moisture resistance is required. Decorative trim (such as aluminum or steel) can also be used at the joints.
